How does Girls’ Generation’s YoonA feel about being compared to Yuri?

Girls’ Generation‘s YoonA expressed the burden she feels about having her acting compared to the skills of fellow member Yuri.

On April 27th, YoonA met with reporters at the vicinity of her shooting location for KBS 2TV‘s ‘Love Rain‘, where she candidly revealed her thoughts on the drama.

When asked how she felt about the comparison between her and Yuri’s acting skills, YoonA answered, “Our stress factors are different. This is Yuri unnie’s first time acting, but I am at the stage where I have to solidify my path as an actress. I was very surprised after seeing Yuri’s acting because she is so much better than I was during my first project.”

She added, “I rested from acting for two years, but I think I matured a lot during that time. Whether it’s working with the other actors or analyzing the script, my eyes for seeing the work have widened. Let’s say if I only looked at my parts in the past, now I look at the work as a whole to grasp my role.”

YoonA was then asked about the reaction she received from the other Girls’ Generation members for ‘Love Rain’. YoonA responded, “Everyone says I come out so pretty in the drama and likes it. In particular, they were all very surprised after watching the kiss scene.”

YoonA then chose Sooyoung as the member who monitors her acting the most, stating, “Sooyoung unnie personally recorded the Japanese dialogue for me. Because I would listen to the recording to practice before the scenes, there were times where I spoke in Sooyoung unnie’s tone, which left me very surprised.”

Nintendo posts first-ever annual loss

Selling 3DS systems at a loss contributes to the Mario factory posting $458 million operating shortfall for the year; Nintendo predicts return to profit next year.

Nintendo today confirmed what it had been predicting for some time: the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012, ended with the firm's first-ever annual operating loss. A 36 percent drop in hardware and software sales year-on-year meant a 36 percent drop in revenue, leading the firm to report a ¥37.3 billion ($458 million) loss for the financial year, on ¥648 billion ($7.99 billion) worth of sales.

Mario and friends hope to return to profit next year.
Mario and friends hope to return to profit next year.

Both losses and sales were smaller than Nintendo had predicted. The firm had predicted full-year sales of ¥660 billion ($8.14 billion) and an operating loss of ¥45 billion ($555 million). The firm said the loss was due to 3DS not fully recovering "from the sales slump early in the fiscal year," despite an aggressive price cut rolled out worldwide from August of last year. That price cut means Nintendo is currently selling 3DS consoles at a loss, but it expects to begin making a profit in 3DS sales again from September of this year.

Nintendo expects to return to profit in its next fiscal year. It is expecting sales to rebound to ¥820 billion and to record a profit of ¥35 billion. It predicts these to average out to $10 million and $440 million respectively over the course of the year. This return to profit will be driven by the release of the Wii U across the world at the end of this calendar year and a number of key software releases.

The firm highlighted the planned releases of New Super Mario Bros 2 for the 3DS in August, Animal Crossing on the 3DS "this fall," and a new Brain Training title "this summer" as reasons for cheer in the coming fiscal year. The firm also outlined plans to expand its Nintendo Network programme that will allow Wii U and 3DS owners to play online, and will be used to provide DLC for its games. The firm also confirmed it was looking into allowing full-game downloads via the Nintendo Network in the future, but it did not offer a timescale for this.

Next-gen that blocks used would be 'awesome' says Crysis dev

Crytek director of creative development states hope that next wave of consoles take steps to block out secondhand titles.

Crysis developer Crytek hopes the next generation of consoles take steps to stamp out used games. Speaking to CVG, Crytek director of creative development Rasmus Hoejengaard said he would enjoy seeing Microsoft and Sony incorporate an anti-used-game system in their future consoles.

Would you support a next-gen console that blocks used games?
Would you support a next-gen console that blocks used games?

"From a business perspective that would be absolutely awesome," he said. "It's weird that [secondhand] is still allowed because it doesn't work like that in any other software industries, so it would be great if they could somehow fix that issue as well."

Speaking generally about next-generation technologies, Hoejengaard said he hopes future consoles offer developers simple design options.

"The worst thing that can happen is they make something that's very complex for developers, regardless of how awesome it might theoretically be," he said. "So getting hardware that allows you to quickly get prototypes up and running, and any kind of scalability they can offer will be great as well, as long as everyone has that scalability and not just a select few."

Rumors have been swirling concerning Microsoft and Sony implementing anti-used-game measures in their respective future-generation consoles. Specifics are not available, and news of next-generation consoles from the two companies is not expected this year.

One industry analyst--Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter--does not believe Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo will block used games with their forthcoming systems. He claims the prospect of consumer backlash will keep these companies from implementing such a measure.

The used-game market has been a contentious issue, with several noted developers making clear their stance against secondhand sales. Those who spoke out against used sales recently include ex-THQ executive Richard Browne, Elite creator David Braben, Volition design director Jameson Durall, and Silicon Knights founder Denis Dyack.

Not all voices are against used games. Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch said in February that blocking used games is unfair. Also during that month, Witcher developer CD Projekt Red's managing director Adam Badowski took a populist gamer stance, saying systems that block used games "can be a bad thing."

Skyrim DLC news possible for next week

Bethesda working to bring "a little more info" on latest Elder Scrolls title and future add-on content plans as early as next week; Kinect patch date not finalized.

Since The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim launched in November 2011, developer Bethesda Game Studios has not offered news on the first downloadable content for the game, but that may change next week.

A Skyrim DLC announcement appears to be imminent.
A Skyrim DLC announcement appears to be imminent.

Bethesda vice president of public relations and marketing Pete Hines wrote on Twitter this morning that the studio is "working on getting a little more info out on Skyrim / DLC." As for a timetable, Hines said gamers can expect news "maybe next week. We'll see."

Though Bethesda has not offered anything concrete regarding DLC for Skyrim, some details about forthcoming content have been dropped. Last June, Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard said Skyrim will have fewer but more substantial DLC packs.

Additionally, in August 2011, Microsoft announced that Skyrim DLC will launch as timed exclusives for the Xbox 360. That platform will be the sole destination to play Skyrim add-ons for the first 30 days, after which the content will head to other platforms.

On top of teasing the first Skyrim DLC, Hines noted that Bethesda is in the process of confirming a solid release date for the role-playing game's Kinect patch. The update is expected sometime in April, with one report suggesting it will launch this week.

Is EA for sale?

The Bloomberg report cites an unnamed South Korean newspaper with the news and does not elaborate on the potential deal in any way. An EA representative told GameSpot, "Only comment here would be that we don't comment on rumors or speculation about our business." Nexon chimed in on the matter, too, telling GameSpot, "Nexon's policy is to never comment on rumors."

EA's shares are responding positively to the rumor, as the company's single-share value opened today at $15.76, well ahead of the $15.01 it closed at yesterday. As of press time, EA is trading at $15.81 per share.

Last week, a report indicated EA was planning to lay off as many as 1,000 staffers after underwhelming Star Wars: The Old Republic sales and an expensive Battlefield 3 postlaunch marketing campaign. EA's fiscal year ended on March 31, and the company will report its full-year fiscal results on May 7.

The PlayStation Vita version of BioShock is playing second fiddle to BioShock Infinite, Irrational Games boss Ken Levine told Wired in an interview published today.

BioShock for the PS Vita remains a ways off.

Levine explained that the studio's focus is presently centered on BioShock Infinite, which is expected to ship for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 16.

"These games really are all-consuming endeavors," he said. "You do want to keep the ball rolling but it is tough to give it your full attention before you finish what you have. But we're getting there with Infinite. So yeah, we're not as focused on the Vita game as we will be."

BioShock for the PS Vita was announced at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo during Sony's media briefing. Details were thin at the show, but last October, Levine offered an update on the game, saying it was in the "paper design stage."

The developer said he wants BioShock for the PS Vita to be "unique" and "an experiment that's a little different." He also explained that the studio is considering outsourcing the PS Vita version to another developer, but said he is wary about handing control of its IP off to someone else.

Set in a fictional time similar to the Japanese industrial revolution, Akai Katana Shin sees the evil Emperor Basho use a newly discovered energy source, Guiding Ore, to develop the powerful Guiding Katana and take control of a nation. Using the Guiding Katana's unique psychic abilities, Emperor Basho controls an elite battalion to wage war on neighbouring countries to continue his reign. The game sees the player take control of a small squad of rebels to stand against Basho and take down the empire.

Xenoblade Chronicles Hands-On Preview

Xenoblade was released in Japan last year, but Western gamers eager for a slice of free-roaming role-playing action have been left waiting for an English-language release. While a firm release date has yet to be locked down, Xenoblade will be appearing under the name Xenoblade Chronicles later this year on the Nintendo Wii. Though our hands-on with the game at this year's MCM Expo was brief, we did get a flavour of what to expect from this upcoming role-playing game.

Vast fields hold plenty of monsters to battle.
Vast fields hold plenty of monsters to battle.

Our journey through Xenoblade Chronicles started in a large green field, surrounded by glassy blue lakes. Our character, Shulk--the lead protagonist--was wielding a typically massive sword and had a partner who followed him around. Taking control of Shulk we explored the lake area, admiring the surrounding mountain ranges and vivid green fields. As we moved down towards the shoreline of the lake, creatures that looked like giant crustaceans appeared. While they were clearly enemies for us to battle, we couldn't do so straight away. To fight, we had to access a menu and select Battle before the enemy would engage us.

Once engaged, we got to grips with the battle system. Battles took place in real time but were semi-automated. Normal attacks, such as the swipes of our sword, happened automatically at regular intervals, while more damaging "breaker" attacks had to be launched via the menu system. Our enemy attacked us too, curling up into its shell and rolling itself towards us. We could dodge out of the way most of the time, but its fast speed often made it tricky to avoid, costing us valuable health points. Our partner lent a hand, hacking away at the enemy while we dodged it, decreasing its health points. Eventually, we destroyed the creature, which left a chest containing items in its wake.

We decided to take those items to a town to see if we could make use of them. We brought up a world map and warped to the nearest town, where we encountered its inhabitants. Most of them were friendly enough, regaling us with tales of monster battles while we explored the many wooden shops and houses.

One particularly talkative citizen kept trying to convince us to try the local curry, but sadly our giant sword wasn't well received by the proprietor of the curry restaurant. Others offered us side quests, such as collecting items for them or killing monsters outside the town. Many citizens were also keen to tell us about ether, which is the substance that all living beings are made out of in the Xenoblade universe--even monsters.

No Japanese RPG is complete without battling giant robots.

Unfortunately, there was little else we learnt about the story from our hands-on, though Nintendo mentioned that it revolved around a war between humans and monsters that had been raging for many years. Though it's hardly the most original of setups, we were promised that the tale would evolve over the course of the game, with new areas of the world map opening up for exploration. Judging by the sheer size of the world map we saw, Xenoblade Chronicles players will have plenty to explore too. Look out for it when it launches on the Nintendo Wii later this year.

Kratos vs. Parappa: Who Will Win in the PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale?

We find out which Sony characters will reign supreme when the company's biggest hitting personalities come out to fight.

The rumours have been circulating for months. What would happen if Sony took a healthy slathering of its iconic PlayStation characters and played them off against each other in a virtual battle to the death? Turns out it's no longer a pipe dream, with the publisher revealing PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, the awkwardly long title that will allow you to finally settle that bet you have with your buddies about whether or not Parappa the Rappa could take down Kratos in a few rounds of bare-knuckled action.

It's not every day you see a psychopathic clown shoulder-charging a racoon.
It's not every day you see a psychopathic clown shoulder-charging a racoon.

This Traveling Wilburys of fighting games is every PlayStation fan's wet dream, and while the limited roster of six characters--Kratos, Fat Princess, Sly Cooper, Radec, Sweet Tooth, and Parappa the Rappa--on show at the event we attended served only to whet our appetite, it's by no means a bad start. Signing over its most beloved personalities isn't something Sony is entering into lightly, with the project being helmed by new studio SuperBot Entertainment, a veritable A-team of fighting game development veterans.

So what are they working on? Sony describes it as a "mash-up brawler," a multiplayer title with more than a passing resemblance to Nintendo's own Super Smash Bros. series. Once you've selected your character and found one to three friends (the remaining free character spaces become AI controlled), your task is to bust their pretty digital faces, earning points for scoring killing blows and being penalised points each time you're slain.

The SSB similarities don't end there, with taps on the square, triangle, and circle buttons and holding one of four directions on the D-pad or analog stick used to activate a range of differing attack types. Some are short-range melee swings, some are flung items, while others are for planting or tossing out defensive weapons like mines or arrows. Deceptively simple at first glance, its fighting game roots mean there's a much deeper experience lurking below the surface waiting to be mastered. There are no combo input systems to memorise or health bars to monitor, and while super attacks are as simple to perform as tapping the R2 button when you've built enough energy to make your character begin to glow, timing its use is essential. At level one (of three), characters will lunge forward, place explosives, fire a deadly gun shot, or mount a giant riding chicken to get bloodthirsty. Taking the chance on dealing prolonged damage over the course of the several-minute-long match and unleashing a level-three super fills the screen with a much larger area-of-effect attack and has a good chance of taking the lives of several victims at once. The risk-reward payoff can easily turn the tide of any match with a single, well-timed release.

Of course, you need a place to fight, and each of the four environments in our demo included a range of static and interactive elements, and like the character roster, pairs up some unusual bedfellows. For example, the Hades arena had the god of the underworld swiping at all four players periodically, dealing hurt to anyone unlucky enough to fall underneath his huge glowing blades. Ground shakes from the tantrum added additional platforms to an otherwise flat surface and allowed for death-from-above attacks. The Patapon army also invaded the scene, taking aim and firing volleys of arrows to snare anyone caught around the highlighted zones.

Ratchet & Clank's Metropolis cityscape came complete with background crates asking for smashing, but quickly became a classic warzone when a whirring shredder opened in the middle of the map and Kratos' old friend, the multi-headed Hydra, popped in to say hi.

Jak and Daxter's Sandover Village came under fire from hole-in-one-hungry golfers, who rained down dimpled, white headaches as we scrambled to kill each other, and a huge turbine sucked parts of the environment offscreen in a vicious vortex. Environmental events are entirely independent of your actions and provide an extra threat. While you won't need to turn them on to see them in action, they're an easy attention thief, quickly distracting you from the other million things happening on the screen at any given time.

Of course, it's not only the other brawlers that could do you a damage.
Of course, it's not only the other brawlers that could do you a damage.

Occasionally power-up items such as glowing double-edged swords, Hedgehog grenades from Resistance, and Wipeout's Gravity Shields enter the fray, requiring you to stay still momentarily while holding the R1 button to scoop them up. Each item provides its own kind of bonus and acts as a good way to build the energy required to perform super attacks, but they must be dropped before you can activate any of your character's special moves. While never specifically orchestrated, many times during our demo we witnessed the remaining three other players in the game gang up to take down the threat before returning to every-man-for-himself survival tactics.

A game like PlayStation All-Stars lives and dies by its roster, and while we were able to try out only six of the as-yet-unknown number of characters that will ship with the game, we did learn a few things about the unique attributes, strengths, and weaknesses of those already included.

At present, Sly Cooper is the only character in the game to forgo the inclusion of a block. Instead, he relies on the power of invisibility to disappear and reappear on the screen at will. This is particularly handy for sneaking up behind an unsuspecting victim and activating the super attack, which uses longtime friend Murray the Hippo as a fleshy battering ram and knocks anyone in its path to their death. Before you cry hacks, observant players can often predict--based on your travel speed and jump range--where you're likely to be. It's certainly not foolproof, and with no real defensive abilities up our sleeve, we often bought a one-way ticket on the pain train. As a master thief, he's also able to steal energy from rival players.

Parappa the Rappa's kung fu tutelage under Chop Chop Master Onion has made him quite the formidable melee specialist. When other players spill their attack power orbs, he can drop his boom box and use it to automatically collect energy without having to risk getting beaten up in person.

Colonel Radec from the Killzone series packs a sniper rifle, and if given enough time and space, he can fire a nasty shot that propels players back and into the air. He's great for playing keep-away, but his susceptibility at short range means he can be punished if you can get in his face.

Sweet Tooth makes his appearance in PlayStation All-Stars sans ice cream truck. Just because he's not behind the wheel doesn't mean he has given up his usual ways, brandishing his machete and more than a little familiar with the painful end of a shotgun. His rush-down attacks can set up more advanced strings of moves, while dropping mines and running for the hills makes it tough for others to follow too closely behind.

Fat Princess was one of our surprise favourite characters. She has the ability to summon a villager at will, without spending any energy to do so. Tapping the circle button shot out a little red helper that was useful for softening up a would-be attacker or providing a chance to put some distance between you and the target. Saving and spending all her power on a level-three skill takes control of the screen briefly as she throws a group of minions out, doing their best to mess up the place.

While members of the SuperBot development team at the event admitted that Kratos was one of the more popular character choices with testers, thanks partly to his recognisability and diverse move set of dashes, spear charges, and melee strikes with his Blades of Chaos, they're working closely to make sure that powerful characters come with their own penalties for selection. One solution they're looking at is for them to require more energy to perform their basic, level-one super attack.

Environments are drawn from across a wide range of games too.
Environments are drawn from across a wide range of games too.

Though only six characters were present in the early version of the game we saw, clear nods were given to a handful of Sony's other titles, such as Everybody's Golf, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, Jak and Daxter, and Little Big Planet. The team also confirmed that they are already in discussions with major third-party studios around licensing deals. At this early stage, everyone could be a contender.

While PlayStation All-Stars certainly wears its influences on its sleeve, it also appears to be bringing a few new features to the multiplayer brawler table. Most importantly, we had a blast slugging it out with other players. Plenty of questions still remain, such as Sony's plans for support of online competitive play, the number and quality of the remaining faces on the character roster, and whether the game will also receive a Vita port. Who are you hoping to see make the cut? Look for more on it ahead of its 2012 release date.
